고향 행성의 파괴 후, 바르미안 생존자들은 이주를 위해 땅을 매입하려는 목표로 지구를 향해 향합니다. 그러나 협상 과정에서 바르미안 지도자 레온이 부하 올리반에 의해 암살당하고, 지구 대표단이 살인 혐의를 받게 됩니다. 혼란 속에서 지구 대표단의 의사 이시무라 류우자키 박사가 살해됩니다.
협상의 비극적인 종결 직후, 바르미안들은 '스타버드'에서 '밸레리안'으로 알려진 집단이 지구를 향한 공포 캠페인을 시작합니다. 레온의 아들 리치어드가 이끄는 이 캠페인은 다양한 '메카 솔져'를 동원하여 지구의 방어선을 공격합니다. 지구인들과 멸망 사이에 남은 유일한 방어선은 변신하고 카라테를 사용하는 초 로봇 다이모스와 조종사 카즈야 류우자키입니다. 하지만 카즈야가 미스터리한 소녀 에리카와 만나 사랑에 빠지면서 상황이 바뀝니다. 에리카는 사실 리치어드의 여동생이었고, 그들의 투쟁 과정에서 카즈야와 에리카는 각자의 종족이 모두 악하거나 선하지 않다는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다.

After the destruction of their homeworld, the survivors of the planet Barm head towards Earth with the goal of negotiating the purchase of land to emigrate to. Unfortunately, during the negotiations, the Barmian’s leader, Leon, is assassinated by his second in command, Olban, and the delegation from Earth is framed for the murder. In the ensuing chaos, Doctor Isamu Ryuuzaki of the Earth delegation is shot and killed.
Shortly after the disastrous end of the talks, the Barmians (called “Valerians” in Starbirds) begin a campaign of terror against Earth, lead by Leon’s son, Admiral Richter, who deploys a variety of “Mecha Soldiers” against the planet’s defenses. The only thing standing between the Earthlings and annihilation is the transforming, karate-using super robot, Daimos and its pilot, Kazuya Ryuuzaki. But that changes when he meets and falls in love with a mysterious girl named Erika, who turns out to be Richter's sister. Over the course of their struggles to reunite, Kazuya and Erika each learn that the other’s people are not all evil...and that their own people are not all good.
