고대 인도 코살라 왕국의 아요디아 왕궁에서 세 여왕에게서 태어난 네 왕자가 태어났다. 그들은 모두 뛰어난 인물로 성장했으나, 궁중 음모 때문에 14년 동안 왕궁에서 추방당했다. 라마 왕자는 아름다운 아내 시타와 함께 숲으로 물러났다. 숲의 악마들을 물리친 라마는 악마 왕 라바나의 분노를 불러일으키고, 시타가 납치되자 그녀를 구하기 위해 원숭이 군대를 이끌고 나섰다. 그러나 강력한 라바나 군대와의 전투 중 라마의 동생 락슈마나는 중상을 입었다. 이때 원숭이 군대의 장군 하누만은 히말라야로 날아가 약초 산을 가져와 상처를 치료하며 락슈마나의 생명을 구했다. 결국 라마의 군대는 "천상의 무기"를 사용해 라바나 군대를 물리치고 아요디아로 승리의 귀환을 했다.
