이야기는 가까운 미래, 인간의 상상력으로 탄생한 세계를 배경으로 합니다. 인간이 귀신이나 괴물이라 부르는 존재들이 나타나 "팬텀"으로 불리게 됩니다. 주인공 히루히코 이치조는 호스아 아카데미 1학년으로, 선배 마야카와 함께 팬텀을 '오행의 정신' 능력으로 싸우며, 팬텀이터 능력을 가진 이즈미 레이나와 고독하게 팬텀과 싸우는 코이토 미나세와 함께 성장합니다. 고등학교 생활의 기쁨과 어려움을 겪다가 어느 사건을 계기로 이 세계의 진실을 알게 됩니다.

The story takes place in the near future, in a world born of human imagination. What humans would call ghosts or monsters appear, and they come to be called "phantoms". The main character, Haruhiko Ichijo, is a first year at Hosea Academy along with his upperclassman Mai Kawakami, who fights phantoms with the ability "Spirit of Five Elements", Izumi Reina, who has the ability "Phantom Eater", and Koito Minase, who fights phantoms in solitude. They experience the ups and downs of high school life before a certain incident leads them to the truth of this world.
